About the “Shaka” hand sign I (and almost everyone in Hawai’i) often use…

In one if the photos I posted yesterday, with myself, James G., and Vicki, I’m using a hand sign. It is called “Shaka”… it is a gesture of affirmation, thank you, friendship, Aloha. If someone slows their car to let you cross the road, you flash them a shaka. This is a POSITIVE affirmative joyful loving signal for ALL locals here.

“The shaka sign, sometimes known as “hang loose”, is a gesture of friendly intent often associated with Hawaii, surf culture, and public school pride. It consists of extending the thumb and smallest finger while holding the three middle fingers curled, and gesturing in salutation while presenting the front or back of the hand; the hand may be rotated back and forth for emphasis. The shaka sign was adopted from local Hawaiian culture and customs by visiting surfers in the 1960s, and its use has spread around the world.”
