[An “I goofed” Update: the video above has no music. However, here is one that does. https://youtu.be/yhPk_JYqnVw. Apparently the music was added by (perhaps) the author of the playlist. Personally, I enjoyed watching the version with the music. Or you could find some Hawaiian music you like and accompany it from your end.]
DM messaged this to me. And I found it helpful to see a (very small) bit about what “Hawaiian Island” life was like in the early 1920’s. This would be in what was known, in the occupiers’ minds, “The Republic of Hawaii”. What came through for me was the innocence of those who appear to be Hawaiian. The other thing that struck me was this… Do you see any overweight Hawaiians?
Also, by listening to the music, seeing the cruise ships, and avoiding any pictures that show the damage to the islands the corporations and military were causing, and the displacement of Hawaiians and Hawaiian subjects from their homes, and the sadness that helped engender, the “Myth of Hawaii” was being created.
There’s a longer list of videos at this playlist.
