There is a message here for some of you, I’m sure of that.
This is a story of hope. This Sand Island Story, filmed in 1979-80 and published in 1981, tells some (actually, only a very small part) of the story, and history, of how Hawai’ian culture, and lifestyle of living in harmony with the land and the ocean, has been piece-by-piece, attempted to be removed.
It is intimately connected to what is occurring on and around Mauna a Wākea (and other sacred locations around the world). Just as Aloha `Āina could not be removed from those who lived on Sand Island, it also cannot be removed from the protectors of Mauna a Wākea and all those who are tuned in to living in harmony with the planet.

The Sand Island Story is a 24-minute documentary produced in 1981 by Windward Video (Victoria Keith & Jerry Rochford) It was shot in 1979 & 1980 and documents 4 months of Sand Island residents attempts to forestall eviction by the State of Hawai’i. Ultimately their efforts failed and the people of this shoreline fishing community watched as bulldozers smashed their homes and destroyed their community, in order to create a public park. To this day, no public park has been created on this site. This film was included in a PBS series broadcast nationally in 1982 called “Matters of Life & Death.” Copyright 1981 Victoria Keith Productions/Windward Video.
